Useful Parts

  • High voltage transformer 2000VAC 1KVA
  • High voltage capacitor 1uF 2000VAC
  • High voltage diode 11kV 300mA
  • Timer circuit with piezo buzzer
  • Microswitches several
  • Thermal cutouts
  • Globe and holder
  • Fan also contains fine (and unwindable) wire on coil
  • Turntable motor contains multipole magnet and fine wire in coil
  • Magnets from magnetron ferrite toroidal
  • Self-tapping screws
  • Mains RF suppression circuit on separate board.
  • Oven case is ready made HV supply 2000VAC, 3000VDC 6VAC

Note that the above is for the "heavy" older MOT's. The newer ones use "lighter" inverter technology and dispense with the transformer. Instead look for inverter board with

  • IGBTs x 2 rated at 600V 30A typ
  • Heatsink
  • Bridge rectifier
  • 2 High voltage diodes
  • largish polyester capacitors 5uF 200V
  • Ferrite transformer with Litz wire.

Dismantling Tips

  • Dissasembly generally very easy
  • Remove turntable before turning unit on its side or upside down

Safety Points

  • High voltage transformer is heavy - can break toes!
  • Magnetron may contain beryllium (hazardous)
  • High voltage capacitor main contain lethal charge if bleeder resistor missing/damaged

Where to Find

  • Electrical appliance repairers - often glad to get them off their hands
  • Roadside, awaiting trash pickup
  • Check local hotels -- they frequently have identical units in each room and will gladly give you ones that don't work. The advantage is that you will be working with identical components.
